The Responsible Pork Production project is a development project implemented in the Varsinais-Suomi and Satakunta areas' Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. The areas' pork producers form the target group for this project.

The project is divided into entities, the goals of which are to improve feeding, spend fixed costs more efficiently and improve documentation as well as the sections of production responsibility.

The project has utilised its own experts, HK Agri's experts, MTT's researchers as well as other expert services.

The target groups and ideas of the project

We hope that the manual is read and used by:

  • pork producers
  • workforce employed by piggeries (the applicable parts of the material are translated into English and Russian in order for it to be understood by as many piggery employees as possible)
  • veterinarians
  • the meat production industry
  • the feed industry and other input producers and input marketers
  • agricultural experts
  • banks and financiers
  • educational institutes
  • agricultural lobbyists
  • other people interested in production

This website contains a description of the best practices in the pork production industry. Its creators are experts who work in piggeries, not only behind desks.

The website was created in order for the Finnish

  • producer to achieve an internationally competitive cost level
  • pig to receive good care
  • consumer to receive high-quality products

It will bring the highest level of success if all stakeholders in the pork industry have a common vision on the best practices of production.

Piggery comparisons

Denmark's cost level is a good representative of cost levels elsewhere in Central Europe. Denmark's production volume is tenfold compared to Finland and the Danish "Pork Production in Denmark" is a good comparison point for the Finnish equivalent. The costs in the chart below are the total costs in the production of sow piggery – intermediate growing – meat piggery.

In practice, it is possible to achieve the Danish cost level with the following prerequisites:

  • By reducing capital costs/kilo of meat. This means a fast piggery cycle with good growth and by minimizing empty pig days
  • By improving the feed efficiency and pigs' growth speed. A good growth speed and feeding based on pigs' needs can be achieved for all feeding types. It is essential that feeding optimisation, adjustments of the feeding equipment, grinding and storage of feed as well as monitoring of the production results are accurately controlled.

In terms of goals, this means a cycle of 14 weeks in meat piggeries from the arrival of piglets to the arrival of the next piglets and a daily gain of over 950 grams.

All the production guidelines on this websites aim at achieving those key figures.
